Rebuilding rugby in Christchurch after the earthquake

Over the past year Christchurch has been hit by a number of major earthquakes. The February 22, 2011, earthquake was the most destructive, claiming 188 lives and causing widespread destruction in the city.

Five RWC 2011 pool phase matches and two quarter-finals planned for Christchurch needed to be relocated to other existing RWC venues.

The response of the global Rugby family was immediate and heartfelt. Messages of support and sympathy and offers of help came from all corners of the Rugby world.

The rebuilding effort continues in Christchurch. As the Rugby world focuses on New Zealand for RWC 2011 and 95,000 international supporters start to arrive in the country, it is only fitting the global rugby family continues to show its support for Christchurch.

Goals
The RWC Christchurch Appeal provides the chance for the global Rugby family to help rebuild Rugby in Canterbury after the earthquake.

The Appeal recognises that while the Rugby world and the whole of New Zealand joins to together to celebrate an incredible festival of Rugby over the coming weeks, we must also recognise the ongoing challenges faced by the Christchurch and Rugby community.

All funds raised in the Appeal will be passed on to Canterbury Rugby Earthquake Charitable Trust, administered by the Canterbury Rugby Union.

A number of clubs and schools need assistance with the repair and development of Rugby grounds and facilities. Clubs and players also continue to suffer financial hardship as a result of the earthquake.

The key goals of the RWC Christchurch Appeal include:

• Helping restore Canterbury’s Rugby infrastructure at all levels
• Assisting Rugby clubs, players and communities affected by the Christchurch earthquake

100% of your donation goes directly to the Canterbury Rugby Earthquake Relief Charitable Trust. Through the generous support of the IRB, all donations made through this site will be paid directly to the charity.
